A ceilidh set from when we were The Big Squeeze Ceilidh Band. Founder members Duncan and accordion player Susan Dawson (hence the ‘squeeze’) moved to the Isle of Skye and were replaced by Cathy and Gordon. A compelling part of the sound came from the Gaelic vocal harmonies of percussionist Michel Byrne and caller Kirsteen MacKinnon who completed the lineup. The Wee Squeeze were a development that focused on more acoustic gigs and when Robert injected additional energy into the music we became Cauldstane Slap to play gigs, benefit concerts and ceilidhs for friends. The first of these reels is from Shetland and possibly refers to Donald Beau, a fiddle teacher on the island of Papa Stour. We found Miss Graham in friend Nigel Gatherer’s collection Gatherer’s Musical Museum and it can also be found in Kerr’s Merrie Melodies. Dhomhnuill a Dhomhnuill also refers to a Donald, this one in a port-à-beul (mouth music) from the Isle of Skye, which is where Duncan hails from. Michel and Kirsteen used to sing this in The Big Squeeze ceilidh sets.
